English Partnerships will enforce size minimums for housing on its land

The Governments regeneration agency English Partnerships has reversed 40 years of public policy with a return to mandatory space standards on all its homes.  It wants to eliminate the trend for so called mircoflats by introducing standards 10% more generous than those of Parker Morris.  The development has been strongly welcomed by the RIBA which itself has campaigned for a return to space standards and sees this as an opportunity for the profession to use its skills to create quality rather than space saving techniques.

Piercy Connor's acclaimed microflat design could be affected by the new rules.

RIBA president Sunand Prasad predicted the development would free up architects' creative skills and improve quality across the board.  "This will give us the scope to really give the functionality, usability and pleasure that design can bring," he said.
